In this guide, we will show you how to install Freetube on Ubuntu systems.

FreeTube is a Free and Open Source client for YouTube built with privacy in mind. Its goal is to make a front end that would interface with YouTube without its users needing to run proprietary JavaScript code. It can connect both directly to YouTube’s servers or route the connection through invidious. FreeTube supports both x86_64 and arm64, and it is currently still in beta.

Install FreeTube on Ubuntu

Follow the steps below to get started with FreeTube :

  • Update your Ubuntu system packages with running the below command:
sudo apt update -y && sudo apt upgrade -y
  • FreeTube package is not available on Ubuntu base repository. So You can install it via downloading the deb package from GitHub as follows:
wget https://github.com/FreeTubeApp/FreeTube/releases/download/v0.18.0-beta/freetube_0.18.0_amd64.deb
  • Then install FreeTube as shown below:
sudo apt install ./freetube_0.18.0_amd64.deb

Access FreeTube

  • Access FreeTube via CLI with the command below:
freetube
  • You can search on the system search bar by typing FreeTube as follows
  • FreeTube will be launched as shown below

How to Remove (Uninstall) FreeTube

  • Remove FreeTube 
sudo apt autoremove freetube --purge -y
sudo rm -f freetube_0.18.0_amd64.deb
